Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Horticulture, provides education in the Agricultural Engineering program within the Faculty of Agriculture and in the Master and Doctorate graduate programs within the Institute of Graduate Studies. Department of Horticulture continues its studies in the following disciplines:
· Fruit Science
· Viticulture
· Vegetable Science
· Ornamentals
· Post Harvest Physiology
Education and research studies are carried out with 15 lecturers, including 5 Professors, 5 Associate Professors, 2 Assistant of Professors, 2 Ph.D and 2 Research Assistants. However, 1 Assistant of Professor was assigned to our department. In addition, 2 doctoral scholarship students also help academic activities.
In the graduate thesis studies carried out in our department, vineyard, fruit, vegetable and ornamental plant collection gardens established for research-application purposes within the boundaries of ÇOMÜ Dardanos Campus are used. Fruit and vineyard areas within the Dardanos Campus are 40000 m2 and vegetable areas are 5000 m2 in size. In addition, there is a 1000 m2 glass greenhouse and a 72 m2 polycarbonate greenhouse used as ornamental plants and vegetable growing areas.
In addition, we utilize and cooperate with producer gardens and private sector facilities in various fields.
There are tissue culture, physiology, molecular biology, cytology, molecular biology, cytology and post-harvest physiology laboratories that can be utilized in the laboratory dimension of scientific studies, as well as cold storages that can be adapted to different conditions used in post-harvest technology studies, research-level packaging house and plant growth rooms where temperature, light and ventilation factors can be controlled.
In our department, various researches on fruit, vegetable, viticulture, ornamental plants and post-harvest technology are carried out and research programs supported by TÜBİTAK, ÇOMÜ BAP and Private Sector are carried out.
Graduates of the postgraduate programs in the Department of Horticulture can work in the Research Institutes of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, other public institutions, banks, seed and pesticide companies, factories processing horticultural products, companies working on the storage and preservation of products, quality - control, research - development laboratories, as well as consultancy or responsible management in many companies. Especially students who have completed their master's degree are preferably employed by the private sector because they are subject matter experts.
Naturally, students who are subject matter experts have the chance to establish a business with their own means with the level of knowledge and experience they have gained. These include commercial cultivation of various fruit and vegetable species, viticulture, nursery, seedling, greenhouse cultivation, mushroom cultivation, cold storage management, pesticide, seed and fertilizer dealership.
